UNSENTENCED PRISONERS

At 30 June 2014:

    • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander unsentenced prisoners accounted for 29% (2,360 prisoners) of all unsentenced prisoners. (Table 8)

    • The most common charge for which Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander unsentenced prisoners were being held under custody was acts intended to cause injury (46% or 1,092 prisoners), followed by unlawful entry with intent (14% or 322 prisoners). For non-Indigenous unsentenced prisoners the most common charge was acts intended to cause injury (26% or 1,482 prisoners), followed by illicit drug offences (18% or 1,041 prisoners). (Table 12)

    • Time on remand, as reported in the Prisoner Census, is time spent on remand as at 30 June 2014, and not the total time on remand. Time on remand is influenced by a number of factors, particularly the time it takes for a case to come before a court. The median time spent on remand by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander unsentenced prisoners in custody as at 30 June 2014 was 2.6 months, compared to 3.3 months for non-Indigenous unsentenced prisoners.
